We wanted to set the record straight, scaling is a way of life and a massive part of the long term training journey! People often apologise for needing to change a movement, asking for an adjustment or feeling like they’re never completing the workout “rx’d”.
Look here’s what you need to know, the “rx’d” standard in CrossFit is there so that people can have valid data to compare across multiple years, populations and in order to find the fittest on earth at the CrossFit Games. And when we program we often do so with an even spread between our advanced athletes and our every day people, with the view of being able to scale back from there, individually. So rx’d is cool to set as a goal, and I know it’s often feels like a great achievement to do the workout exactly as it is set out. But you know what the most important thing is? YOU! You’re experience and what you need/want for that day, week, month or year.
You have a life outside of training right? We don’t have many if any professional athletes in the gym that I’m aware of. Maybe you’ve got kids? A demanding worklife? You’ve got a bit of a sore throat this week? A dicky shoulder from years of sport? And I’m sure you occasionally have a big weekend. Training is just as variable as life is and therefore it is essential that you have room for variety. You’re workout and what you need is specific to you, and as coaches it is our duty to ensure you get the adjustments needed to get the most out of it for that particular day. For us, it’s a fantastic way to bring some of our creativity into each session and in no way is it “annoying” to us, you need never apologise nor thank us for doing our job, we take great pride in looking after each and every one of you. Even the people you admire the most will scale workouts, no one is perfect, nor are they ever expected to be.
So please, step into the Growth mindset and enjoy the workout for what it is meant to be….YOUR TIME to sweat, play, move and chase those feel good endorphins. We work together to ensure you get the best experience, whether that’s working around an injury, a sleepless night or more specific to your level and goals. And if you’ve been sitting on the fence about getting started, this applies to you too, we’ve always got all sorts of methods for all levels to get fit, to keep you safe and progressing long in to the future.
Happy Scaling legends!
